여성은 저음의 남성에 더 끌린다 
저음으로 말한 내용, 더 오래 기억

여성에게 오래 기억되고 싶은 남성이라면 가급적 낮고 굵은 목소리로 이야기를 해야 좋을 것 같다.

영국 스코틀랜드 애버딘 대학교 연구팀은 최근 남성의 목소리가 여성의 선호도와 기억력에 어떤 영향을 미치는 지를 조사했다.

그 결과 여성은 낮고 굵은 남성적 목소리를 선호할 뿐 아니라 그런 목소리로 전해진 정보를 더 정확하게 기억하는 것으로 나타났다.  

연구팀은 두 가지 실험을 했다.

첫 실험에선 45명의 여성에게 한 물체의 사진을 보여주면서 그 물체의 이름을 녹음된 목소리로 들려주었다.

녹음은 낮은 톤이나 높은 톤의 남자목소리, 남자처럼 변형시킨 여자 목소리 등 세 종류였다.

그리고 나서 여성들에게 앞서의 물체 사진, 그리고 이와 비슷하게 생긴 물체의 사진을 함께 보여주고 둘 중 어느 것이 앞서 보았던 것인지를 가려내게 했다.

연구팀은 또 여성들에게 앞서 들었던 목소리들 중 어느 것이 더 마음에 들었는지 점수로 나타내도록 했다.

두번째 실험은 또 다른 46명의 여성에게 남성과 여성의 실제 목소리를 들려주면서 앞서와 비슷한 내용으로 진행했다.  

그 결과 두 실험 모두에서 여성들은 낮은 톤의 목소리를 일관성 있게 선호하는 것으로 나타났다.

그리고 낮고 굵은 목소리로 이름을 들려준 물체를 더 잘 가려냈다.  

 연구팀은 “남성의 낮고 굵은 목소리는 여성의 기억력을 강화시키는 것으로 확인됐다”면서

“이번 실험은 남성의 목소리 톤이 여성의 잠재적 짝짓기 후보자 선호만이 아니라 기억력에도 영향을 미친다는 것을 확인한

최초의 사례”라고 말했다.

이번 연구 결과는 과학 전문지 ‘인지와 감정(Cognition and Emotion)’에 실렸으며 미국 과학논문 소개 사이트 유레칼러트가 12일 보도했다.

To make women remember you, talk in a low voice

In the second experiment, as well as manipulated voices, the researchers used real male and female voices to test how 46 new women rated the voices and how they scored on object memory.

In both cases, the authors found that women had a strong preference for the low pitch male voice and remembered objects more accurately when they have been introduced by the deep male voice.

Smith concludes: “Our findings demonstrate that women’s memory is enhanced with lower pitch male voices, compared with the less attractive raised pitch male voices. Our two experiments indicate for the first time that signals from the opposite-sex that are important for mate choice also affect the accuracy of women’s memory.”

Dr. Kevin Allan, who supervised the research, said, “We think this is evidence that evolution has shaped women’s ability to remember information associated with desirable men.

Good memory for specific encounters with desirable men allows women to compare and evaluate men according to how they might behave in different relationship contexts, for example a long-term committed relationship versus a short-term uncommitted relationship. This would help women to pick a suitable partner, and that’s a particularly important ability to have because the costs of poor mate-choice decisions can be severe.”
